Gin History
Gin was first made in17th century in Holland where it was sold in chemists for stomach problems and gout! Juniper was subsequently added to make it more agreeable, make that drinkable! (but with genuine medicinal properties). The English took it home with them after the 30 years war (Dutch Courage, the army's equivalent of rum to take the edge off the damp weather!), but its real popularity came in the roaring twenties and the new passion for cocktails. London Dry Gin became an indispensable ingredient in the world's most famous cocktails.

The thing with gin
Its the botanicals, you see. Gin is basically neutral white grain spirit, which is often not even be made by the actual gin producer, that is then given its distintive flavour by distilling this spirit through a combination of herbs, flowers, fruit and spices. So the secret is this combination with points seemingly going to who has the most exotic ingredients from as many different places from around the world as possible. That, of course, is for you to decide, but we can help you out, and naturally we have a few favourites. Off you go. Gin and tonic heaven.

BLACKWOODS - Vintage Dry Gin  The mix of classic gin ingredients from around the world and wild flowers hand-picked by shetland crofters (it says so in the brochure!) give this gin its excellent, refreshing flavour. Distinctive and very different from many other gins.

BOMBAY SAPPHYRE The more sophisticated brother of Bombay gin, one of our house gins, a cleaner more defined flavour obtained from Bombay's unique distillation process. Fabulous aromas of fruits and spices combine with a clean lasting flavour.
